Interview with Best Thesis Award recipient – Cohort 16

As every year, the best thesis award from the IMMIT cohort was presented, and this year it was awarded to Bran van Wingerden for his thesis on AI Auditing: Incorporating eXplainable AI in an Auditing Framework. We asked him a few questions about his thesis and his most memorable moments from the IMMIT program.

Can you tell us about the process of finding and writing your thesis and what it resulted in?

It all started in Finland during a course on Digital Economy, where we explored the topic of responsible AI. This was my first introduction to eXplainable AI. As we know, AI is rapidly transforming our world, so understanding and managing its complexities is crucial. This motivated me to delve deeper into eXplainable AI, focusing on concepts like transparency and explainability.

While searching for a subject, I connected with KPMG, which agreed to collaborate with me on my thesis. Discussions with colleagues helped me blend academic literature with practical experience, allowing me to identify existing research and gaps in the field.

My goal was to address how to audit AI effectively, leading to the development of an AI Auditing Model. I utilized design science to combine theory and practice into a framework. I conducted extensive literature research to establish a knowledge base and performed interviews with professionals to understand their real-world challenges. This combination revealed a significant gap: what processes should be followed when auditing AI?

Ultimately, my thesis serves as a conceptual starting point rather than a definitive framework for professionals. Given the evolving nature of this field, it could assist experts in developing more effective auditing strategies.

What memory do you treasure the most from your time in IMMIT?

My cohort was special, composed of only six students from four different countries. This made our experience unique and memorable. With such diverse backgrounds, we had different ways of living and communicating. Being a small group allowed us to live closely together and experience various cultures. We often had spontaneous ideas—like deciding to go to Lapland or the Baltic Sea—and would be on our way within a couple of days. This camaraderie also provided support during exam periods. The relationships I built with my five amazing peers will always be the highlight of my program.
